Hepatoprotective Effect of Roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) in N-Diethylnitrosamine Induced Liver Damage in Rats

Introduction: Liver damage due N-diethylnitrosamine (DEN) is a global health challenge. The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) calyces’ water-extract as Hepatoprotective material against liver induced by DEN in rats. Material and methods: Twenty-five (25) adult female albino Wistar rats were grouped randomly into five groups (Gs): G1, Normal healthy animals (act control); G2, DEN; G3, Roselle extract; G4, + roselle-extract; G5, nanoselenium. Tissue malondialdehyde (MDA) oxidative stress marker, antioxidant enzymes, superoxide dismutase (SOD) catalase (CAT) measured. Also, caspase-3 apoptotic marker tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-a) inflammatory factor, assessed. Results: results revealed decrease MAD level significant increase markers, SOD CAT DEN-group compared with control group. Moreover high caspase-3; TNF-a recorded normal control. Administration roselle-extract led MDA parameters. In addition, noticed. These findings ensured histopathological results. Conclusion: improve architecture, might be involved hepatoprotective activity exposure. Further studies are needed for elucidation clinical applications plant bioactive materials explore its mode action attenuating preventing carcinogenesis.
